Be Successful! Although anxiety and depression were not quite talked about in the past, it has been posing a significant threat to youths and adults nowadays. With the advancement in modern norms of life, a person feels obligated to stay in trend with the rest of the world regardless of their emotional, physical, or financial circumstances. It is all a matter of time when someone falls into the pit of depression and anxiety from where it might be challenging to come back to oneself.
It is difficult to imagine a life full of darkness filled with problems and situations that are just too hard to get out of but there is always a lot worse going on in someone else’s life, which is just a pinch of what you are going through and they are living their lives to the fullest.
There are many important things to consider before jumping onto your problems and resorting to being depressed. To name a few, healthy relationships, your health, and the education you have received will all fall under the negligent eyes of your problematic life. Practice being grateful for what you have, then think about what you don’t.
Below, you will find a few pointers that may help you for coming out of anxiety or depression and improving your mental health. The pointers you will read here are mere reminders that you should consider even if you are doing well in life.
1. Maintain a Healthy and Thriving Relationship.
Being alone and being lonely are two different things. When you are alone, you can contemplate on something that you are good or bad at and work on possibilities and opportunities lying in front of you. In contrast, loneliness will isolate you from your social life resulting in you feeling anxious and depressed. Loneliness can significantly impact how you look and feel about the world around you. It will drain you off of your energy and mental stability. Studies have shown that loneliness affects a person’s lifespan up to 15 years shorter.
The best way to come out of your lonely bubble is to prioritize your relationship. A relationship doesn’t always have to involve being intimate with your opposing gender. A thriving relationship can be with your friends, family, or workmates. Having a solid interpersonal bond with people around you will give you the confidence of being recognized and heard. You will feel more important because you will have so much to offer if you have a strong relationship with society.
It is not always considered a weakness if you seek help from your friends or family. It sometimes means that you genuinely want to make a difference in your life. They will help you one way or the other. You just have to be willing, honest, and convey the feelings you have within you. It can be good or bad, just do not hold it back.
2. Work On Your Physical Health.
Exercising has proven to be one of the biggest factors that can help you fight back with any sort of anxiety, depression, or stress. It can help you sleep better and make you more relaxed. Facts about maintaining your physical health and exercising will assist in producing endorphins (hormones that will make you feel good about yourself).
It does not have to be an intense workout every day. You can go for a short walk or a run in the morning or evening for 30 minutes. Studies have proven that doing cardio for just 5 minutes will reduce anxiety significantly.
A professional tip for adults will be to exercise for about 150 minutes weekly. It can be light workouts like walking and biking. For those who feel cardio is easy, you can take up running and swimming for about 75 minutes.
3. Challenge Yourself Everyday.
You cannot always be at the same spot from where you started. Status indeed plays a big role in one’s life, and everyone should work hard to achieve it but always make sure that while you are pursuing your goals, you are enjoying what you are doing. If you are not enjoying it, there is no point in working hard to reach that position just because you are getting paid more.
You might think that you are at the best place you can ever be, but there is always a chance to grow, learn new skills, and achieve greater things. The best thing about challenging yourself every day is that you can set different goals and work on them slowly. As small as not smoking or drinking for a day or a week will make you feel different. You are stronger than you think; you can achieve and deserve way more if you challenge yourself to be better every day.
Do not settle for less. Look for something that will drive your mind and body. A simple suggestion will be to wake up early in the morning and be grateful for what you have, and start your day with a positive mindset of making a difference.
4. Be Grateful.
Anxiety, depression, and stress are all results of overthinking. Sit back, relax and be grateful for once. Take 10 – 15 minutes from your morning schedule and practice gratitude every day. It can be about having a beautiful day, having good health, having friends and family around you, and having a job. Be thankful for whatever you have right now and embrace it.
An impactful suggestion will be to maintain a journal where you can write all the things you are grateful for. It can be big or small. It is a guarantee that your mornings will be better than before.
5. Check In With Yourself.
It’s possible that you’re nervous, sad, or unduly stressed without even realizing it. Try to be aware of your body and thoughts that circulate your mind regularly, and pay attention to any signs that feel wrong. Ask yourself the following questions to assess your mental health:
- Is everything I used to be interested in still interesting to me?
- Do I seem irritable, furious, or tense than usual?
- Do I consume more alcohol than I used to?
- Has my sleep quality or amount deteriorated?
- Is my appetite different now?
- Do I have less energy than I used to have?
- Have my family or friends seen any physical or mental changes in me?
6. Learn about mindfulness meditation.
You might have heard about the benefits of meditation but don’t think it’s suited for you, or you do not have time to practice meditation. Mindfulness is a type of meditation that allows you to concentrate on your thoughts. It can be done at any time and any location. Instead of concentrating on the past or worrying about the future, the purpose of mindfulness meditation is to be more present.
Deep, concentrated breathing is the main factor while practicing mindfulness. It can also be achieved by taking a walk or doing yoga. Think of anything that works for you and repeat it to yourself while meditating. You can think about the good things in life and motivate yourself with self-motivating thoughts like being assertive, beautiful/handsome, and happy.
7. Prioritize your sleep.
You could find it difficult to get seven to nine hours of sleep each night if you’re preoccupied with a job. However, it is necessary to do so. Sleep deprivation, after all, will increase emotional and psychological issues. In fact, one study found that persons who said they had sleeplessness were four times as likely to develop depression.
It’s not simply about obtaining seven to nine hours of sleep each night to have a good night’s sleep. It’s also essential to sleep and wake up energized for the day ahead.
If you’re having trouble getting a good night’s sleep, try scheduling meditation into your daily routine, exercise every day, eat a well-balanced diet, and avoid things that can disrupt sleep, such as caffeine, alcohol, and smoking.
8. Self-care Is A Must.
Self-care is different for everyone, but the premise is the same: it’s critical to take care of your physical, emotional, and mental health to live a happy life. Self-care can include getting enough rest, meditating, exercising, and other activities that make you feel good about yourself.
Eating healthily, traveling somewhere new, trying new things, relaxing on your couch, spending time with a friend are all examples of self-care. It’s not so much about the type of self-care as it is about the effect: it should make you feel like you’re taking care of yourself in a way that helps you cope with anxiety, stress, and depression.
9. Don’t be afraid to seek help.
Do not be afraid to call for help. It can be to a friend or a family member who is close to you and can understand your situation. It is more likely that they might be able to help you instead of you trying by yourself.
